Kungyu Liew Kungyu Liew was born in Jitra , Kedah. He is an elusive artist who ponders his world through very satirical eyes. His works explore a lot of folk symbolism which he juxtaposes with a hidden humor that inevitably hits you in the face. His latest solo exhibition was entitled `Cadangan-Cadangan untuk Negaraku’ (Suggestions for my country) at the Petronas Gallery in April 2009. `Cermelang, Gemilang, Terbilang was exhibited at the Singapore Biennial in 2008, borrows from both local folk symbolism and the grand narratives of literature and applies this to the modern developing world as a means of story-telling, creating a space where beauty, high camp and kitsch, theatre (the Wayang Kulit analogy) and a playfulness in the installation meet.’ In 2006, Kungyu collaborated with Laurence Loh and Heritage Trust of Malaysia to facilitate the `Digi Amazing Malaysians: Lunas, the Rubber Story’ in Lunas, Kedah. This project saw the conservation of an old abandoned smokehouse into a local community museum, where all the contents of the museum were collected and presented by the children of the local communities. This project was a huge success that it was short listed in 2009 for the Aga Khan award, one of the most prestigious international humanitarian architecture awards. Kungyu Liew 's interview video
