Sunday: 17 July 2011 Talk 2: `Expanding the experience of World Heritage Sites’ Chairperson: Elizabeth Cardosa, Executive Director, Heritage of Malaysia Trust.
World heritage sites are fast becoming favorite tourist destinations that offer unique experiences. No doubt, that tourist dollar will ensure the livelihood of those living within these sites, however the fragile social ecosystems that exist here, need to be respected and understood. The awareness of the WHS must prelude the actual site visit, giving tourists an opportunity to educate themselves about the local culture and even offering a chance to visit the site virtually. Tourists nowadays heavily rely on the internet to book their holidays; thus making the internet a powerful medium for WHS to expand the experience in order to reach a wider online audience. Under these dynamics comes the collaboration of leading conservationist, Laurence Loh with DIGICAP, headed by Khairul Hazrin of Multimedia University. DIGICAP have recently produced 3D virtual rooms of Cheong Fatt Tze mansion and Suffolk House; both buildings were winners of UNECSO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards. These rooms were produced by stitching a large composite of high dynamic range images. Laurence and DIGICAP are currently developing methods to allow these heritage buildings to `explored’ online.
