Restoration of Suffolk House Suffolk House has been painstakingly restored back to its 1818 form, reflecting it’s most significant period. What was once in ruins, it now stands as reminder of the early days of the Prince of Wales Island, as it was named in 1786, the genesis of modern Penang. After 44 years of attempts by the public to save the grand Anglo-Indian Georgian House, which stands on what was once a pepper plantation owned by Captain Francis Light, it finally happened, largely through funds raised from the private sector. The conservation works took 7 years and it has now finally opened its doors to the world. It is the winner of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation 2008 “Award of Distinction”. |

Current Use The Heritage Site Manager, Badan Warisan Heritage Services Sdn.Bhd., has activated the spaces with a fine dining restaurant, a series of walk-through museum rooms, meeting and function rooms, with the elegant Grand Ballroom as the piece de resistance for all to experience and a garden landscape reminiscent of Captain Robert Smith’s 1818 painting of Suffolk House. |

Future Plans It is envisaged that eventually the surrounding area comprising of the riverside park and the adjoining Municipal Council buildings could be converted into complementary spaces for Suffolk House. The vision is for the area to be turned into an Arts and Culture Precinct, with sufficient critical mass to attract citizens, students and visitors all year round to participate in globally-linked events and happenings. |
